Respect for and Display
of the United States Flag

The Federal Flag Code prescribes the proper way to display and show respect for the Unites States Flag.

A few key guidelines taken from Public Law 94-344 follow:

  • Universal custom allows us to display the flag from sunrise to sunset on buildings and stationary flagstaffs outside in the open.

  • You may display the flag 24 hours a day if illuminated during darkness.

  • Do not display the flag during inclement weather unless an all-weather flag is used.

  • No other flag should be placed above or, if on the same level, to the right of the flag of the United States of America. An exception allows naval chaplains at sea to fly the church pennant above the flag during church services for the personnel of the Navy.

  • When flown at half-staff, it should first be hoisted to the peak then lowered to the half-staff position. The flag should again be raised to the peak before lowering it for the day.

  • The flag should never be used for advertising purposes.

Displaying the U.S. Flag

  • From a building, hang the flag on the staff, with the stars away from the building.

  • In a window, hang the flag vertically with the stars to the left of anyone looking at it from the outside.

  • Against a wall, when displayed either horizontally or vertically, the stars should be uppermost and to the observer’s left.

  • On a vehicle, attach the flag to the antenna or clamp the flagstaff to the right fender.

  • The flag represents a living country, therefore a lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.
